OPERATIONAL
PLATFORMS

Our projects are implemented either through our own subsidiaries or through closely managed partnerships with on-the-ground organizations. We leverage carbon finance to develop mutually beneficial projects under three main platforms that comprise the core of our business - Cleaner Cooking,  Efficient Lighting and Sustainable Energy.

CLEANER COOKING

Nearly 3 billion people worldwide cook their meals using inefficient cookstoves or open, three-stone fires that burn solid biomass fuels, like wood & charcoal. We are a leader in the movement to promote adoption, access and use of cleaner, healthier and more efficient improved cookstoves (ICS) focused especially on rural and peri-urban households in developing countries.

Our primary objectives in support of clean cooking are to: improve the health and well-being of women & children (most commonly the cooks of their households), by reducing exposure to toxic off-gassing and particulate matter (PM 2.5) in biomass smoke. Reduce deforestation, land degradation and support conservation agriculture. Further supplemented by our specific sustainable energy projects.

Reduce drudgery for women and girls by eliminating the need for frequent gathering of larger diameter firewood, often many kilometers away from their own villages. Our drudgery reduction research has proven time-savings benefits for women & girls so that they may choose other activities according to their own preferences. Mitigate climate change through reduced greenhouse gas emissions, including decreasing the unsustainable harvest of woody biomass and avoiding black carbon and methane emissions from inefficient open fires.

EFFICIENT LIGHTING

Between 2010-2013 we made it possible for poor Indian households to replace their inefficient incandescent light bulbs (ICL) with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs). We distributed more than 8.6 million CFLs during this period, and have now transitioned to distribution of the leading-edge, long-life LED lighting for households in South Asia.

As of February 2021 we have distributed over 4.5 million LEDs to poor communities in India. Families using ICL's spend as much as 10% of their income on electricity in India.

LEDs have a lifetime of 25,000-50,000 hours and significantly cut the electricity consumption as compared to ICLs. 15 million LEDs avoid the need for 1000 MW of coal-fired power at peak hours for up to 10 years.

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY

Reliable access to sustainable, affordable energy is one of the most significant economic and social challenges facing developing countries today.

Sustainable energy creates jobs, improves energy security, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions. CQC has invested in: sustainable forestry and land management projects that generate bamboo seedlings to be used as a source of renewable timber and fuel, large & small-scale solar photovoltaic power projects, and manufacturing lithium-ion batteries to increase access to charging technology for Base-of-the-Pyramid families.
